For 2017 the APPG for Diabetes will begin its programme with a meeting on the food and drink industry’s initiatives to reduce the sugar content of their products and towards the Childhood Obesity Plan.
Our next meeting will take place on Wednesday, 18th January 2017 from 4.00-5.30pm, Committee Room 19.
Almost 12 million people in the UK are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, most of these cases can be prevented. Over 80% of the overall risk of developing type 2 diabetes is caused by being overweight or obese.
Making products healthier and encouraging healthy choices are important steps to help fight the obesity crisis and ever increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the United Kingdom.
The introduction of the Soft Drinks Levy in 2018 gives manufacturers time to reformulate products in order to avoid them being covered by the Levy. Public Health England’s voluntary programme allows retailers and manufacturers to choose if and how to reduce sugar from their products. The industry’s decisions will impact England’s food choices. So what can we expect?
The APPG plans to hear from manufacturers and retailers about the strategies they are undertaking in response to the plan and their views on what is yet to come. Speakers will include Lucozade, Coca Cola UK and the Food and Drink Federation.
If you would like to attend, please RSVP by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Due to limits on room capacity, please note that admittance will be on a first come, first served and one organisation, one person basis.
